Founded in 1990, the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts is a national academic society with independent legal personality. It is composed of experts, scholars and related scientific and technical workers who are engaged in basic theory and application research, software and hardware technology development and application promotion of graphics in China. Famous universities, research institutes and IT companies in China are important members of the Society. The purpose of the China Graphics Society is to unite the majority of graphics scientists and technicians, actively carry out research on the basic theory and high technology of graphics, and promote the development of this discipline and its application in various fields of national economy. The professional fields of the Society cover digital image processing (enhancement, recovery, reconstruction, analysis), image understanding, computer vision, image compression and transmission, body vision technology, scientific computing visualisation, virtual reality, multi-media technology, pattern recognition, computer graphics, medical image processing, computer animation, computer games, digital art, film and television special effects, digital cameras, DV, spatial Information Systems, etc. The business scope of the Society includes: theoretical research, hardware and software development, application promotion, scientific popularization, professional training, technical consultation, academic exchange, publication of professional books and journals, etc. Since its establishment, the Society has carried out a lot of fruitful work in the above aspects, and has been widely praised by the academic community, the business community and the general scientific and technological workers.
The highest authority of the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts is the National Congress of Members, whose powers are exercised by the Council between Congresses. The fourth Council of the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts (2002-2006) was chaired by Pan Yunhe (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of Zhejiang University), who was re-elected as President of the Society (2006-2010). Xu Guanhua (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Minister of Science and Technology) was the Honorary Chairman.
The permanent offices of the Society are the Secretariat of the Society and the Office of the Society. There are also Academic Committee, Technical Committee, Youth Working Committee, Organizing Committee, Editorial and Publication Committee, as well as several branches and representative bodies such as Railway Committee, Multimedia Committee, Virtual Reality Committee, Medical Imaging Committee, Digital Art Committee and Digital Imaging Committee. In order to strengthen the work of the Society's secretariat, three new departments have been established, namely the Department of Popularization, the Department of Social Work and the Department of Membership, to fill the gaps in the Society's popularization work and to strengthen the functions of organizing exhibitions, training and membership management.
The Chinese Journal of Graphic Arts is the journal of the Chinese Society of Graphic Arts. Founded in 1996, it is a comprehensive monthly academic journal, published at home and abroad. It highlights academic research and reflects creative, high-level and important scientific research results in graphic and information science. It emphasises practical applications and reflects the practical technology and scientific and technological progress of national graphic information science. In addition, the Intenational Journal of Image and Graphics, which was founded with the participation of the Chinese Society of Graphics, was also officially published in Hong Kong.
Since its establishment, the Chinese Society of Graphics has conducted eleven annual academic conferences in China to carry out academic exchanges, which has enlivened the academic atmosphere and enhanced the interconnection and communication among the scientific and technological workers engaged in the research of graphics and science in China.
In May 2000, the executive council of the Chinese Society of Graphics discussed and passed the decision to hold an international academic conference every two years and a national academic conference every year starting from 2000. Since the First International Conference on Graphics was officially held in Tianjin, China in August 2000, the Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth International Conferences have been held in Hefei, China in 2002, Hong Kong in 2004, Chengdu in 2007 and Xi'an in 2009. These international conferences have strengthened the exchange and communication with international counterparts and have been unanimously praised by scholars and participants from home and abroad.
